Core / layers announced - Omega and gecko have been working on the Linux Core/Layers sub-project.

The Core/Layers idea is to create a specification encompassing all the details necessary to create a running, useful Linux machine. The specification would define what capabilities each section provides, and to a certain extent how it provides it, but would stop short of the details. This will allow different implementations of the specification, yet retain compatibility between them.

The overall goal is to ensure that applications will run on all Linux machines, not just the distribution for which it was designed and/or built. This is one of the primary barriers to seeing more commercial software and support for Linux. Without standardization, each vendor has to either choose one distribution to support, spread themselves thin attempting to support all distributions, or not support Linux at all. The vast majority are choosing the latter.
